Contact nowTunisia is a North African country, it covers an area of 163.000 km². Despite of its limited area, Tunisia is a country of contrast: 1350 km of coast and beaches, 25.000 km² of sandy desert separated with its famous lake of Chott el Djerid, a salt lake surrounded by palms and sand dunes.
The archaeological remains that we find today in Tunisia confirm its rich and varied history and that it was an attractive area of interest to many cultures and civilizations that have left their mark until nowadays: Berbers, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims, Italians, Spanish, Turkish and French.
Tunisia has a population of almost 11.000.000 living from 3 primordial activities:
Climate
Temperate in the north, with mild rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The south of the country is desert. The terrain in the north is mountainous, which, moving south, gives way to a hot, dry central plain. The south is semiarid, and merges into the Sahara.
Language
Arabic is the official language, and Tunisian Arabic, known as Derja, is the local, vernacular variety of Arabic and is used by the public. There is also a small minority of speakers of Shelha, a Berber language. Due to the former French occupation all Tunisians speak French.
Religion
The constitution declares Islam as the official state religion and requires the President to be Muslim. Aside from the president, Tunisians enjoy a significant degree of religious freedom, a right enshrined and protected in its constitution, which guarantees the freedom to practice one's religion.
Currrency
Tunisian dinar (TND). It’s illegal to import or export dinars and they are not accepted in the duty-free shops at Tunis Airport. Major credit cards such as Visa, American Express and MasterCard are widely accepted at big shops, tourist hotels, car-rental agencies and banks.
